vegetable garden update

romaine (Parris Island Cos in front, Freckles in back)

Except for my broccoli, whose leaves are being eaten by some worm I can never catch, my fall vegetables are doing well. My lettuces are particularly happy. I still have jalapenos and anaheims producing, too. I already harvested a bunch of my basil and froze it, but I still have plenty going strong, at least until tomorrow night when it is supposed to get down to the low 40s. Today's weird weather is perfect for harvesting lots of those lettuces: heading out!

leaf lettuces (Red Sails, Oak Leaf Blend)

butterhead lettuces (Speckles, Marvel of Four Seasons); leaf lettuce (Tango)

chard (Five Color Silverbeet, Bright Lights) and kale (Italian Lacinato Nero Toscana)

cauliflower (Chef's Choice Blend)

carrots (Scarlet Nantes, Purple Haze, Carnival Blend) that I need to thin

beets (Early Wonder, Gourmet Blend, Detroit Dark Red)

Such beauty in those beds. Everything looks good enough to eat...

You know, I have an escaping my capture worm eating my broccoli plants this year. Never catch it in the act, only find the damage after. Weird...

Hope you got everything done before the rain started. Yay for more rain!

Iris -

The garden looks great. Looks like you'll have some tasty veggies very soon. I had caterpillars eating my broccoli, caulliflower etc. I sprayed with Bt a few times and it took care of it.

texasdeb--Thanks! I love your "Such beauty in those beds." I think it's weird that the worm/caterpillar doesn't bother the cauliflowers a few inches away. And yay for more rain: I was able to get lots of lettuce harvested today. (Now I need to finish washing and drying it.)

Laura--I have some Bt I've never used. I'm torn between trying it or sacrificing the broccoli, hoping the caterpillars will be satisfied there and not move on to my cauliflower, etc.

Absolutely beautiful, Iris - bet you're enjoying having a real kitchen garden, even if some little worms have joined the party.

Guess everyone in Austin will be covering stuff for tonight and tomorrow - sounds like we're getting some real winter!

Leslie--Thank you! I wish I could find the worm eating my broccoli...

Annie--We are really enjoying having a real kitchen garden--thanks! I've even had the pleasure of giving away some of my lettuce to friends. I spent quite awhile covering veggies and other plants today!

Your garden looks so beautiful! We're about to give up on the fall garden and begin preparing for the spring. The lettuce was delicious, by the way.

zoomletta--I'm glad you liked the lettuce! I'm sorry to hear your fall veggies aren't working out.
