Day 10 house progress

The painters have finished all the major scraping and sanding and applied the first coat of primer. Next they do spackling, more spot sanding, and another coat of primer. The carpenters still have some rotten wood siding and crown moulding to replace, too.

The crooked column will be replaced.

Our original windows are double hung but the tops have been painted shut for many years until they unstuck them—no small feat. I’ve never seen them work this way, where you can lower the top half or raise the bottom half—very cool!

Must be fun to watch the transformation.

It is fun, in a slightly nerve-wracking way! This week's going to be even busier because we're going to have a third crew out here (in addition to the carpenters and the painters) to shore up the old (almost falling down) detached garage.

Your house is adorable and I like the longer shots showing your gorgeous non-grassy front beds.

I am envious of those old style double hung windows. Just the thing for weather like today.

While I am sure it is best to have a non-crooked column, that sure lends character overall. Are you going to recycle that some way as a prop for a flowering vine or something?

Thanks, TexasDeb!

We're trying to keep as much original wood as possible, unless it's totally rotten, so we'll see about recycling the column. Good idea! I have never tried any flowering vines before.

Iris, how exciting! I had my house painted a few years ago, and it made me feel like I had moved into a new home. I can't wait to see your new purple gingerbread home!

Hi Iris,

After living with the worn paint for years, and then planning it for so long, do you kind of do a double-take every time you come back to the house from a few hours away...still surprised it looks so wonderful now?

Yes, Annie! And it's still only got primer on it. I can't wait until there's actual paint! The awning guy dropped off a few canvas samples today--more decisions now. I think we still have a few weeks to go.
